! In a Three person Political Race Winning Does Not Mean the Majority of People Really Wanted You To Win

Any incumbent who barely ekes out a primary win with only 43.5 % of
the votes should be alarmed at what is clearly a loud message of voter
dissatisfaction with past performance. That’s the stark reality that County
Commission candidate Susan Latvala faced when she looked at her bathroom mirror
the morning after the election. The shaken professional politician Latvala has
good cause to be grateful, however, because luck was on her side. Had her two
opponents—Beverly Billiris and Carl Folkman—not split the Republican vote,
there is a strong likelihood that Latvala would already be out on the streets. Second,
there was a record-low vote due to the torrential downpours. (Did Latvala
perform a rain dance the night before?) With serious cause to fear the full
wrath of her angry constituents on November 2, Latvala’s political machine must
be in full damage control mode.
Given the viciousness of the
Republican candidates toward each other in the primary, Latvala’s Democratic
opponent in the general election—Bob Hackworth, the ex-mayor of Dunedin with an
excellent reputation on a local level—should prepare to see Latvala come out
slinging dirt from the get-go. The next eleven weeks of
electioneering shall be interesting.
The primary campaign was filled with many events, including one nasty
debacle that may come back to haunt Latvala in the weeks ahead. Specifically,
the Latvala machine purposely set off a false alarm that caused a politically
motivated witch-hunt via a costly investigation by the Office of the Inspector
General, U.S. Department of Labor, Racketeering & Fraud
Investigations.
A young lady named Robyn Poppick, then an employee of WorkNet Pinellas,
had some students out on a civics lesson project learning how the democratic
process works. The lesson was to practice collecting petitions for political
candidates. To make the exercise more realistic, the example petitions
contained the name of Beverly Billiris, one of Latvala’s opponents in the
Republican primary. When a cursory report reached Latvala, she reportedly flew
into a rage and pushed a number of political buttons. When Poppick telephone
Latvala to explain the civics project, Latvala immediately hurled a stream of
invectives and threatened Poppick with prison. According to a St.
Petersburg Times story, Ms. Poppick was fired from her $48,000 per year job
and has since not been able to find employment.
Needless to say, the investigation
proved that Ms. Poppick had committed no crimes nor was there any malice.
She has been cleared of all charges, but now she is bankrupt. Her reputation
has been sullied and she cannot not get a job. One can only speculate that if
the sample petitions had listed Latvala instead of Billiris, Poppick would
still have her job.
Susan Latvala, unrepentant, has not extended an apology to Poppick, much
less offer to help her regain her job. Via a misguided act of political
vengeance, an innocent person has had her career destroyed and left bankrupt by
Latvala’s vicious political machine. Sadly, good people such as Poppick are
simply considered collateral damage in incumbent Latvala’s desperate bid to
continue feeding at the public trough at a $90,837 annual cost to Pinellas
taxpayers.
Like other career politicians who take for granted the power and perks of
a government job, Latvala has acquired a bad case of “arrogance of office.” She
has been in office a long time. TOO LONG!
During the primary, Latvala’s arrogant disregard for her constituents was
evidenced by her willful absence from candidates’ forums so she could attend
political cocktail parties. Perhaps she was avoiding situations where she would
have been publicly embarrassed by her lack of accomplishments and her dearth of
ideas. Let’s hope Latvala can find some points of view to share with Pinellas
voters in the weeks ahead.
Public forums with give and take questioning will be difficult for
charisma-challenged Latvala. She has a well-deserved reputation for her tart
tongue that spews forth sarcastic and vitriolic words toward both her
constituents and Pinellas County employees when they somehow invoke her wrath.
The gristmill of the Latvala
political machine that is awaiting her opponent, plus the money the Republican
Party and business interests will pour into her coffers will be something to
behold.
It is well know that avoiding toxic people is a key to living a happy
life. Likewise, voting out toxic politicians is a key to good government. Hopefully, the voters will not falter
again at the ballot box.
Latvala would do well to pay
heed to Abraham Lincoln’s admonition: "You can fool all the people some of
the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the
people all the time."
Working Mom- Aug 29 2010 Awesome editorial and high time! Shameful how that bully Latvala butchered Robyn Poppick in the press day after day. Why Poppick is one of the very citizens Latvala is supposed to represent; wife, mother, and County administrator...Tsk tsk; an honest woman, cleared of any wrongdoing by a full federal investigation but destroyed nonetheless. Latvala seized an opportunity to cry wolf and grab some free press; used that pocketed reporter, David DeCamp to do it too. VOTE LATVALA OUT.
Anchors Away- Aug 29 2010 Part 2 -and of course the Democratic faithful also. Then you certainly must look at Form 6 Full and Public Disclosure of Financial Interests. It states “My net worth as of June 1, 2010 was $2,167,636.00 it is interesting to see how bad off she is and everyone is donating to keeping her in office. In the list of donations for this race I found less than 20 people who made what one would call a “common man’s donation” that is $20 or less the rest was all in the 50, 100, and majority were all above
Anchors Away- Aug 29 2010 yesterday I went to the library and went to the Pinellas Supervisor of Elections website and looked up the donation list of CANDIDATE: Susan Latvala presently there are ten quarters listed and the total amount comes to $111,094 that is just for the primary race. I went through each quarterly report all of which are listed at www.votepinellas.com/index.php?op=F&ss=108034&spanish=N It will be interesting to keep an accurate eye on the money which will pour in from the Republican faithful (C-Prt2)
Scott Fisher- Aug 29 2010 Since Susan voted to raise our taxes in 2003 (MSTU Millage and Communication Services Tax) and imposed full cost allocation on the Unincorporated Area, she and her fellow commissioners have diverted over $100,000,000 dollars of our population based revenues away from the Unincorporated Area. This has resulted in higher property taxes for property owners in the unincorporated area.
Ten years of Susan Latvala is enough. Queen Latvala's constituents in Palm Harbor are bitter and angry as hell.
Scott Fisher- Aug 29 2010 Ms Poppick had the misfortune of going up against the Tag-Team of Latvala-Latvala. . Politics can be brutal when you are dealing with such a mean and vindictive person like Queen Latvala. If "Let them eat cake" Latvala's lips are moving it is a good bet that she is lying.
We should have a fund raiser to start a legal fund for Ms Poppick to sue her majesty Susan Latvala for all the pain and suffering that was intentionally inflicted on Robyn Poppick by the Latvala Political Machine.
Robyn- Aug 28 2010 Commissioner Latvala; Reference your attack upon The East Lake Blister to take away from your distasteful actions. Undoubtedly, again, similar as all politicians, you are spinning a situation to suit yourself and escape the truth of your actions. There was no breach of school board policies because #1, it was a YouthBuild program and everyone was advised of the activity via email and calendar - if anyone had a question that was the time to ask. YouthBuild ALWAYS had field trips to meet the program standards. It's not just a work program - it's a life transformation program that PTEC cannot support fully and it had to be found elsewhere to meet the Federal Government's standards, and I took it seriously. I was a guardian of taxpayers' monies. The teachers were paid by WorkNet to teach construction (GED could be anywhere) and WorkNet drove the program. Not the other way around. #2. I was given full reign of the program by my boss from day 1 unless I had problems. I received permission from the federal stimulus-funding source that actually funds the WorkNet YouthBuild program (the Feds have the voice mail and so do others, such as Mr. Wheeler’s newspaper). There was no real WorkNet investigation, and we both know why. #3. The YouthBuild program calls for public health awareness, voter’s registration, LOCAL POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT by the students, etc. Give me a break - know the program Commissioner! Please refer to www.youthbuild.org to educate yourself on the program. #4 Only YOU called it campaigning. Not me, not the students, not their talking points they were given in writing to assist them with questions. The student questioned said that he was made to feel as if he did something wrong - he actually said he got confused and didn't know why people said he was doing something he wasn't. I spent time consoling him from his "interrogation". Shame on those who did that to an Exceptional Student. Here's a fact check: YOU called my boss. MY boss called me and my job was to make it go away and tell you the truth, which you discarded. You just couldn't be wrong when you already called the media now could you? When you found out it was me, you laughed, and only you and I know why, don't we? Want me to go public with that? I signed the termination letter because I was advised I wouldn't get unemployment if I didn't - would I have gotten a choice if I was 100% wrong? It was retroactively decided that I should get permission for program curriculum, when I was doing it all along before your call to the CEO - ouch, got me there on a technicality! You may fabricate anything you'll like but the truth is on MY side, not yours. There's a lot more to this, but I don't want to embarrass you as you've done to me. The Federal government agrees with me after their investigation; are you disagreeing with the various departments of the Federal Government and saying they are wrong? I have risen above prevarication by you and your pals and thrown under the bus by a CEO because you made noise. All you did was hurt those kids. I have integrity, which makes me much richer than you.
slatvala- Aug 28 2010 Mr. Wheeler really should have checked his facts before writing this very inflammatory misrepresentation of a serious breach of School Board and WorkNet policies. Ms. Poppick took the students off schools board property without permission-the federal government was paying for them to be in a vocational class to learn job skills. It is against federal and state law to ""campaign" during work hours. The students admitted that they were campaigning for Billiris.
I thought the press checked facts?
Geordie Girl- Aug 28 2010 What was done to Robyn Poppick was just plain wrong !! I hope there are charges brought forward. More people need to voice their angry at Latvala ...the bully in politics!! Is this the kind of represenative we deserve? We we now have another chance of booting her offer her throne.
Get out and vote and get behind Bob Hackworth.
Ok he is not a republican. This is not the time to stick to party lines not at the cost of having four more years of Latvala. as a republican I voting for Hackworth.
A Palin Pal- Aug 27 2010 Wow. Mr. Wheeler, what an editorial! SHE WORKS FOR US! HOW DARE SHE INTIMIDATE ANYONE! She bullied me too and her "let them eat cake" attitude stinks! Hackworth is right...she's too deep in special interests....how does a lil ole gal from Kentucky become so rich in Florida? She uses people, probably her ex too (always wondered about that weird relationship)...Leona Helmsley is tame compared to Latvala - Queen of Mean. Be gone from this kingdom!
Anchors Away- Aug 27 2010 Commissioner Latvala undoubtedly has alienated a fair share of the Pinellas County Voters. It would behoove her to ensure that when she comes back to the fold she comes with a respectful tone and demeanor. She needs the citizens they certainly do not need her. Instead of "lip service" which is her usual bill affair there had better be something on the platter. Yes humble pie is hard to eat, but an act of contrition best be the ingredients of meal or it will be cast back in her face quickly!
